Ball State University students are all “What the Chirp?” after the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics retracted an offer to give a free bowl ticket voucher to each student in attendance at Tuesday night’s game.

An e-mail was set to all students Monday morning around 8 a.m. touting the game and free towels to those who brave the miserable conditions expected. The not-so-fine print on the e-mail also included a tease for the free ticket vouchers, all under the e-mail subject line of “Free Rally Towel & Free Bowl Ticket.” Click the image below to see a larger version of the e-mail.

Another e-mail was sent later with the same image, yet sans the bowl offer text at the bottom. The subject line also changed to: “FREE Rally Towel at Last Football Game!”

The Ball State Daily News broke the story around 4:50 p.m., and Ball State’s Athletics Office issued the follow e-mail statement within the 5 o’clock hour:

Ball State Students,

The athletics department truly appreciates all the support you have given the Ball State football team and all of our other programs.  Monday morning an e-mail was inadvertently sent out about free bowl game tickets to students attending Tuesday’s game vs. Western Michigan.

Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to fulfill that promise.  We certainly need your support tomorrow night against Western Michigan and appreciate your attendance at all of our events.

Once we know if we are going to a bowl game, the student packages will be announced.

Thanks for all your support.  See you Tuesday night when the Ball State football team takes on Western Michigan at 7 p.m. at Scheumann Stadium.

Go Cardinals!!

Article comments at the Daily News site – and a few sources in the Twitterverse – say the offer was announced at at least one home sporting event this weekend.

This reminds me of a classic Seinfeld episode … see the video after the jump.
