Also about having little to gain...I think you are mistaking. If Ball State goes to Detroit and beats North Carolina, which ESPN is projecting in the Motor Bowl, it does nothing for Ball State's final rankings. On the other hand, if Ball State beats Boise they will improve in the ranking and show that they are a legit non-BCS team. Unfortunately, I don't think Boise gains as much from playing Ball State.
