The Ball State Daily News broke (yes, broke) the story today: Ball State has turned down Boise and the WAC’s invitation to go to the Rowdy’s Truck Stops Humanitarian Bowl. This bowl, which would have put two of the best teams in the nation against each other was passed on by Ball State. As far as respect and longevity of a University football program, this move is totally illogical.

Ball State has nothing to lose from this game. If they win they move into the top eight, possibly six, in the nation and if they lose they lost to a really, really good football team on their home field. WITH BLUE TURF! This is not just because I have a strange fixation on colored turf, but because their home uniforms blend in with the turf.

Individually, people have much to gain from this:

The University can make more money from going to Detroit than Boise. Expenses are less and they’ll sell more of their seats.

But why, if you were serious about making a football program long term, would you decline a bowl that would put you up against one of the best teams in the nation?

The only answer is that those involved aren’t interested in the long term success of Ball State football. They are, as always, looking for the short term answer.

This is nothing new for the school from Muncie. This is the school that forced out people who wanted to stay and were successful like Dick Hunsaker, Ray McCallum and Randy Litchfield. This is a school that has continuously made the wrong decisions in respects to athletics.

For those of you who were hoping 12-0 would change things, it hasn’t. We’re still Ball State

And will be for the time being.

  1. The Motor City Bowl is going to have a slot open as well. Why doesn’t Boise State go to Detroit? That’s more of a neutral field than the smurf turf.
