[SYSK] Oscar Nominations Out
January 22nd, 2009 by Will O'HarganThe Oscar Nominations were announced today by the Academy and a surly looking Forest Whitaker. It had a few major surprises, including no Best Picture, Best Director or Best Screenplay nomination for The Dark Knight (though Heath Ledger was nominated, which is probably all you care about), the total snub of Gran Torino and the bizarre fact that there were only three nominations for best original song and not one of them was Bruce Springsteen’s “The Wrestler,” a song most people (myself included) considered a shoe-in to WIN the category.
The Academy decided to screw Kate Winslet and those who predicted nominees by giving her a nod in Best Actress for The Reader, a performance most people thought she’d get nominated for Best Supporting Actress. For casual movie fans, however, this will be an uneventful year at the Oscars, made even worse by the fact that, for some reason, Hugh Jackman is hosting. Unless he plans to use Wolverine’s claws to impale the losers, I don’t see this being entertaining.
The nominees are on The Academy’s offical site, if you’re interested. I will post my predictions later today. Speaking of predictions, you can see how my predictions for who would get nominated turned out. I have bolded those that were predicted. Of the eight major categories (Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay) I correctly placed 31 of the 40 nominees. I actually beat out The LA Times’ Chris “Boomer” Beachum and Robert Licuria, Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger, and more than a couple bloggers. So, I’m feeling pretty good right now. So long as I don’t look at the stock market, that is.
