Facebook went public yesterday with its intent to provide custom URLs (i.e., http://www.facebook.com/bewilderedsociety) for its users.  Considering the hell involved in finding an AIM/Yahoo username that doesn’t have 12 numbers in it, and given that Facebook is unleashing this to its more than 200 million active users at once, you may want to heed the following advice:

Starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 13, you’ll be able to choose a username on a first-come, first-serve basis for your profile and the Facebook Pages that you administer by visiting www.facebook.com/username/. You’ll also see a notice on your home page with instructions for obtaining your username at that time.

Start thinking about your name now, because Facebook – following MySpace’s lead – won’t let you change it.

Facebook Page admins should note the qualifiers for getting custom URLs, too:

I tried to secure a name for my Page but Facebook said the Page was not eligible. What are the requirements?
Your Facebook Page must meet two requirements: it must be live on Facebook prior to the May 31, 2009 cut-off date and have a minimum 1,000 fans as of May 31, 2009.

Uh, hey guys… Go fan us on Facebook!
