[Hoosier Daddy?] $5 mixed drink nets 81 drinking citations at IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana State Excise Police cited 81 people — including 78 minors — at an underage drinking party near Indiana University’s campus in Bloomington.
Officers raided the party early Sunday morning after one of the residents sold a plainclothes officer a mixed drink for $5. A release from the excise police says state law requires a permit from the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission for the sale of alcoholic beverages.
Police say officers found more than 100 people inside the home, including many hiding in the garage and basement.
The Indiana Daily Student, IU’s student newspaper and likely where the AP story originated, features an insightful quote about the incident from a police officer:
“Large underage drinking parties are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Excise Officer Travis Thickstun said in the release.
Small binge drinking parties with minors are acceptable? Score.
One commenter on the IDS article weighs in with his wisdom:
Just like I’ve said all along, these students are alcoholics, hypocrites, in pathetic physical shape, and all pray to an invisible man in the sky. Luckily for me I listen to metal and not rap. I am in incredible shape and do not degrade my body with poison. Also, the women I date laugh at the notion of being at a so called “party”, drinking yourself into oblivion. Once again I’m better than all of these gelatinous, parasitic tapeworms. I dare you to disagree because you can’t. You people are so worried about what others think it’s pathetic. You’re jealous of me and you show it every single day in class. Of course you’ll never say anything because you’re all mindless cowards.
Yes, metal music is certainly the voice of sane, logical healthy people.
But hey, 81 is sizable number of citations. Some statistical analysis for you, courtesy of data from Indiana State Excise Police:
- 84 tickets and 7 warnings during IU’s welcome week earlier this fall, down from a high of 181 in 2007
- 84 citations to 82 people during Indiana State’s Homecoming Weekend
- 32 citations were issued during the Sept. 19 Kenny Chesney concert at Indy’s Lucas Oil Stadium. 22 of those were minor possession citations
- 19 citations to 16 people during Ball State University’s Homecoming Weekend
- 10 citations (6 minor consumptions) during 500 race day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In fairness, most of the citations were issues the night before the race.
