Just when you thought airline fees couldn’t get any worse, if you’re overweight (I’m looking at you America) and plan to fly Ryanair you may soon be paying even more.

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (22 Apr) announced that it will now consider how to charge a ‘fat tax’ after more than 30,000 passengers voted in favour of charging excess weight fees for very large passengers in an online vote over the past two weeks.

They are now asking passengers to vote once again on how best to implement such a charge.

1. Charge per kg over 130kg/20 stone (male) and 100kg/15 stone (female);
2. Charge per inch for every waist inch over 45 inch (male) and 40 inch (female);
3. Charge for every point in excess of 40 points on the Body Mass Index (+30 points is obese);
4. Charge for a second seat if passengers’ waist touches both armrests simultaneously.

Although this is more than likely just a big PR campaign, it would be interesting to see how they plan on fining passengers as they board.

David Holmes has an interesting way of getting travelers attention when giving pre-flight instructions. Instead of reading them as most people would expect, he raps them. Holmes describes in an interview with Central Florida News 13:

“We’re going to shake things up a little bit,” announces David Holmes, who tried something new after noticing his passengers tuning out and glazing over during the instructions.

“I take them by surprise. I usually don’t tell them I’m going to do it,” Holmes said.

Holmes needs a little audience participation, asking passengers to stomp and clap to keep the beat as he rhymes the flight instructions in his own rap.

From the article:

Elaine Murphy, who is a member of The House of Lords and a trained doctor, came clean about the prank she devised with husband John in a letter to the BMJ published on Wednesday.

She said: “Perhaps after 34 years it’s time for us to confess that we invented cello scrotum.

“Reading (Dr) Curtis’s 1974 letter to the BMJ on guitar nipple, we thought it highly likely to be a spoof and decided to go one further by submitting a letter pretending to have noted a similar phenomenon in cellists, signed by the non-doctor one of us.
