David Letterman: “Welcome to the program. My name is David Letterman, or as the staff calls me, ‘That one.’”

Conan O’Brien: “During last night’s debate, John McCain sparked a controversy when he referred to Barack Obama as ’that one. Afterwards, McCain said: ’What — like I’m supposed to remember EVERYONE’S name now?”’

Jon Stewart:to Michelle Obama
“So you’re a lot like Sarah Palin.”

Stephen Colbert: “The only thing missing was Karl Rove dumping Gatorade over John McCain’s head at the end.”

Jay Leno: “It was broadcast live from Nashville. I don’t want to say the debate was boring, but I never thought a political event in Tennessee could be that dull without the help of Al Gore.”

Craig Ferguson: ““’Which one of these senators tapped your foot in the bathroom?’ ’That one.’ That would be appropriate.”

Palin, at a rally in Clearwater, Florida this morning, spoke about her “less than successful interview” with CBS’ Katie Couric. See some crowd-shot footage of the speech here, about one minute in.

“I was just trying to keep Tina Fey in business, just giving her more information,” she said. “Job security for S.N.L. characters.”

She might not be stopping there, a Chicago Sun-Times columnist says:

Some key McCain staffers are content with Palin joking about the “SNL” routines on the campaign trail — as when she scribbled “I’m not Tina Fey” on a supporter’s cell phone and said she’d dressed as Fey on Halloween. But others — including the governor herself — think a return punch on the NBC airwaves is what’s needed.

I’m hearing some sort of Palin tweak of Fey’s American Express commercials is in the works.

Bets on her effing that up, too?

Below the fold, a look at what debate moderator Gwen Ifil thought about the SNL skit, as told to Meet the Press on Sunday.

TVNewser reports:

PBS’ Gwen Ifill has broken her ankle after tripping and falling down stairs at her home last night, a NewsHour insider tells TVNewser. We’re told Ifill had been walking up a staircase, carrying research related to her moderating duties at Thursday’s Vice Presidential debate in St. Louis, when she took a wrong step.

Nevertheless, the site reports the show will go on for Ifill
… or as she should introduce herself Thursday, “Ifell.”

She’s stoked for her Thursday night debate date with Obama’s main man, Joe Biden, according to NYTimes.com.

“I’m looking forward to meeting him, too,’’ she said. “I’ve never met him before, but I’ve been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, second grade.’’

He really just said that?
