Lamar, best known for placing large billboards on the side of the highway to entertain you in traffic, is asking its local inventory holders to donate space to the “voiceless” Conan O’Brien.

On its own will, the company established aplaceforconan.com. The site serves as an official-ish hub for explaining Lamar’s intents.

If a digital display rotation is not fully sold, Lamar is asking its offices to display dynamic creative that shows Conan’s latest tweet – free.

The odds of catching a billboard with the display depend on how well your market is doing. (We’ll let you cheer for continued recession with Conan tweets or thriving economy.) Regardless, you can see a map of possible places to catch an active billboard here.

We live in divided times, and it probably won’t surprise you to learn that social networking trends are  just as divided along lines of education, income, and geography as the rest of the country.  A report from the folks over at Nielsen reveals that Facebook, with its Ivy League pedigree, is most popular among those who have, or are getting, a college education.  MySpace users, on the other hand, typically make less money and aren’t as well educated.  Likewise, Twitter is most popular among urban dwellers

Zuck’s beast launched a new feature allowing users to tag friends and Facebook pages in its posts.

The tool is not exactly scientific, but it searches your tweets for cliché words used by and about homosexuals (albeit arguably “cliché”), then it rates your heterosexuality as a percentage. But does it include cheeky commentary about your results and a list of words that earned you the label? Check!

It turns out, @bewilderedsoc is 73% hetero! (Well, as a boy, that is — as a girl, it’s only 45% hetero, whew!) According to some in-depth research at AfterEllen.com, that makes us about 10% less hetero than Lindsay Lohan and 61% more hetero than FoxNews. Click the image to read in full detail.

It appears Twitter user @cynful1 began tweeting from the coaster during the incident, although a closer look from a local news outlet reveals a potential attention whore looking for a piece of the action.

The Bay Area NBC affiliate reports @cynful1 might be a fake.

Just one problem: Twitter, which notes how a user posts a particular message, reports that all of Cynful1’s messages were posted “from Web.” Unless Cynful1 was toting a laptop, it would be tough to post messages from Web; most Twitterers in her situation would be sending tweets via text message or a mobile app like Tweetie.

Also suspicious: Cynful1 doesn’t mention any plans to visit Great America. Her account doesn’t list a location. But two venues mentioned in previous tweets, Du-Par’s and Hotel Cafe, are located in Los Angeles, not the Bay Area.

Curiously, her tweets started up around 4 p.m. Pacific time — two hours after local fire departments first reported rescue attempts, and well after saturation media coverage had begun, all of which speaks to an attention-getting stunt.

They even tried to call her out on it.

It’s difficult to tell whether the problem was resolved, though it’s a great (non-deadly) example of someone using Twitter for fame when fame is not due.

I’m reasonably certain that MSNBC is trying its hardest to lose any semblance of credibility as quickly as possible.
